#ROW80 – 2020 – Round 2 – Check-in 1

ROW80 2020 – Round 2 – First check-in

Hi everyone!

Only a couple of days into the Round, so not much to show, but I have stuck to my plan so far, so that’s good.

How about you? Did you have a nice start? Let me know in the comments! I hope you’re well, wherever you are. ^^

Over 60%, I use various shades of green, 100% being this flashy green.
Teal is for weekly goals, which I will evaluate as I go with a or X.
Purple is for projects that are currently on hiatus: dark purple means there’s still a lot to do while mauve is for projects that are well advanced.
Finally royal blue is for comments on my progress since I last checked in. And sky blue is for stating my objective for the round within each goal at the beginning of each Round, then to assess my overall progress at the end.
Also, by the end of each round, I’ll give myself a PASS or a FAIL for each goal.
I hope you’ll enjoy these rainbow posts. 😉

Writing goals (fiction & poetry)

  1. #52haikus2020 challenge and #chaïku: I will continue to post one haiku a week on social networks for each of these challenges. To save myself some time, I will also compile the haikus weekly rather than wait till the end of the year to do so. I will evaluate weekly in terms of check or cross ( or X) for each subgoal.
    #52haikus2020 (on Wednesdays)
    – compile the above.
    #chaïku (on Saturdays)
    – compile the « chaïkus ».
  2. New novella Ophelia’s Boudoir: I will edit and revise after or while writing À tâtons. I will also use this to explore Scrivener through its demo version, so I will wait until I have watched a few tutorials.
    – compiling from app to .docx. Work in process: it’s in odt and on the right device for conversion. 90%
    – 1st corrections (automatic cleaning)
    – 1st rereading (rediscovering, basic corrections from auto-correct and simple improvements)
    – prepare docx for Scrivener.
    – import to Scrivener.
    – explore the possibilities Scrivener has to offer.
    – check which beta-reader is available and willing. 0/7 (0%)
    – beta-reading: see who might prefer an online option and who will stick to a paper copy.
  3. Little Black Riding Hood (aka LBRH aka CS1) and ensuing saga (code name « CS »): I will reread and make the first revisions this round.
Reread and edit (1st revisions: coherence check and quick grammar check): 0/101 chapters (0%)
Revise (2nd revisions: improvements and new structure, during Round 3 or 4)

    – expand first draft (snowflake technique?).
  5. Malice au Pays des Merveilles / Miss Chief in Wonderland, an erotica sci-fi series (of short stories or novella): After completing the first draft for À tâtons, I will go back to this series, hopefully during Round 3, but Round 4 would be fine too.
  6. Explore Scrivener and its possibilities. In this Round, I’ll start watching tutorials to understand the software better and start using it with Ophelia’s Boudoir
    – watch tutorials.
    – download demo version and install. I downloaded but will wait until I’m ready to use it to install. (50%)
    – use demo version for at least 1 story (maybe start planning a second one to use other bits.
    – decide whether it’s worth buying the full version.

Work-related Goals (courses and so on)

    1. Get the quality certification: I will finish implementing my course of action and will stay up-to-date regarding the recent developments (COVID-19 and lockdown means the deadline is going to be postponed but we won’t get a date until the crisis is over, obviously).

    2. Online courses: I will aim at completing the uploading of Hanashimashou module 1 and starting the beta-testing process during this Round or at the beginning of the next. BUT I will keep that goal on hold until lockdown is over because there’s no way I can record with the girls around. They keep barging in and I don’t want to rebuff them for it, so if the confinement is longer than expected, I’ll just change my objective accordingly.

    3. Story Time series (teaching guides): I will wrap-up Bat and Friends this Round and hopefully get back to Goldilocks too. I will try and keep working on Wizard and Cat on the side, but since I used to do that while my online course videos were encoding, it could be trickier than it seems.

Personal goals

  1. Self-development: Not a new goal per se, but I’ve decided to do it more so I’d like to keep track of what I’m doing.
    – « Writing the queer voice » course. It was supposed to start ysterday but we got an email explaining it had been postponed due to last minute registrations and will finally start today. But I’m actually still waiting for my access codes…
    – « Teaching online » MOOC. 30%
    – « Mastering the legal and financial aspects of professional training » MOOC. 1/10 sections. (10%)
    – Reading about emotional intensity.
    – Scrivener tutorials.
    – Japanese study. For now, I’ll just keep practicing casually by watching things in Japanese. Lately, my girls have been crazy about Totoro and Ponyo, so there’s a lot of that going around. ^^
  2. Housework: We’ll start implementing the plan and making adjustments when necessary during this Round.
Assess how much time each task would take (with Hubby). We did the general assessment and are giving ourselves time to adjust if we realize we got some timings wrong. 90%
Discuss & set frequency with Hubby. We just have 2 rooms left here, but we’re waiting until they’re done to decide. 95%
Cross-reference with the renovation work and decluttering efforts to be more effective. 5%
Schedule one-time things to get them out of the way.
Create reminders for things that need to be done regularly.
Decide on a color code to assess completion. 10%
    Start doing. 10%
  3. House renovation & redesign: We will work on improving our finances (and recovering from the COVID-19 and its consequences on business) then focus on insulation and finishing what’s been started.
Extra color code for the insulating project. Plus what needs to be done before is this indigo.
x Keep working on the parental suite upstairs
(ceiling, walls, floor). We will finish the bathroom once lockdown is over (because until then we can’t get the tiles anyway).
x Take care of the leak problem.
We will check whether the repairs are satisfactory and get the insurance to refund the damaged goods.
x Add walls and a door to the new toilets.

    >INSULATING QUEST:
We’ll contact the plasterer and roofer to get their quotes ASAP.
x Insulate the wall in the family room where a fireplace used to be.

x Insulate the unused fireplace in the office.
    x Insulate Hubby’s office.
x Replace the porch doors and entrance door.
x Check the roof of the annex and replace its window.
    x Insulate the annex.

x Rebuild the wall between the family room and the garage.

x Bury the water evacuation pipe that’s in the yard.
x Finish the electricity in the garage and annex.
x Expand the laundry room into the garage we don’t really use and make a gaming and working out room in there.

  4. Unpacking & decluttering: We will try and repack, ie we’ll put things in boxes in the rooms where they’re suposed to end up once we’re done with renovating said room.
    Here my short-term goals are:
x Decide what to sell, donate or keep in the storage room. Some sorting was done. =D
x Put what we’re selling on the French equivalent of Craigslist.
    x Donate the rest ASAP.
x Reorganize the storing room (so far it’s been « as is »: we arrive and put things where we can…)
x Clean the entrance porch (because that’s where we’d like to put coats and stuff for sale)
x Get rid of more clothing, especially bras I’m never going to wear anymore because underwire is definitely out of the way!
  5. Health quest: I will try to go back to fitness and yoga during the second Round and I will keep up my beauty routine. I will evaluate weekly in terms of check or cross ( or X) for each subgoal; a check means over 50%.
    Get some rest:
~ meditate at least 3 minutes on workdays (Wed through Sat).
~ nap when the girls do (Sat through Tues).
    Take care of myself:
~ hair: brush twice a day for luster. (does not apply right now because I plaited my hair)
    ~ skin: moisturize daily.
~ skin: use lotion before bed. X
    Be active:
~ stretch every morning to avoid muscle pains.
~ do something related to cleaning or decluttering on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays at least (aiming at something daily during the confinement).
~ do yoga with the family at least twice a week (ideally, once between each check-in) during the confinement (and hopefully keep going afterwards). X
~ Go back to walking at least once between every check-in once confinement is over. (does not apply for now)
  6. Mental health quest: I’ll just record things for further reference.
    Week 1: NTR so far.

#ROW80 – 2020 – Round 2 – Goals

ROW80 2020 – Round 2 – Goals

Hi everyone!

For this Round, I’m a little cooler because the goal that got me stressed last Round is completed at long last. My other goals seem manageable enough, though the confinement made me readjust quite a lot.

Another thing I’m readjusting is how many books I release on a yearly basis. Originally, I felt I lacked time for actually writing, but now that it has become a routine, I realize the most time-consuming aspect of self-publishing is what comes after, namely building the book and marketing it.

So I’ve decided to go easier from now on so as to not feel like I’m always marketing something. As a result, you’ll see deadlines being pushed to a further future down here and that’s fine.

This also tells a lot about my mental health: I used to feel that I would never get the time to do it all, and I still do, but I think it’s OK now. Another things is that I used to have a hard time picturing me over 40 (I did have suicidal thoughts back then, so that surely did not help). Now that I’m 37 (verging on 38), I realize this was probably some form of angst and I don’t get that feeling of urgency the way I used to. That realization has helped me pace down and also feel more complete and at peace most of times.

How about you? Are you readjusting too this Round? Let me know in the comments! I hope you’re well, wherever you are. ^^

Reread and edit (1st revisions: coherence check): 0/101 chapters (0%)
Revise (2nd revisions: improvements and new structure, during Round 3 or 4)
Find beta-readers for the long run.
    – Plan the second volume in detail.
  4. À tâtons (Feeling the Way), an erotic novel: I will start writing the first draft after revising LBRH.
    – transfer the plan from Novelist to Word: as much as I love using the app to plan and write first drafts, the auto-correct on the tablet is a problem. I know I could just switch that off, but there are other problems with punctuation and it requires me to spend lots of time correcting things that Word automatically makes right. For LBRH, I used Google Docs, but it’s not as good as the good old software in many aspects. As for Scrivener, I do consider buying it one day, but before that, I’ll use the trial version for something shorter, I guess, hence the addition of the extra goal below.
    – write the first draft: 0/38 scenes (0%)
    – expand first draft.

    1. Get the quality certification: I will finish implementing my course of action and will stay up-to-date regarding the recent developments (COVID-19 and lockdown means the deadline is going to be postponed but we won’t get a date until the crisis is over, obviously).
      reorganize my archives85%
locate proof for the audit. 90%
make tutorials. The good news is I don’t need to make them all before the audit. Proving they’re on the way while some are already online should be more than enough. 0/30 (0%)
create new processes and related doc. 5/7 (71%)
make general course syllabi. 6/34 (18%)

Translating goals

  1. The Dragon’s Secret (English to French): I will revise my translation this year (probably over the summer), aiming at publishing it in 2022 after that (and also use it as a model for my MOOC on self-publishing).
    – Revised translation: 0/19 chapters (0%)

  2. Article about being emotionally intense. I will try and complete the revised translation this Round. I’ll also finish reading the book in English at least.

    – Read related book in French to check the official translations for key phrases. 16/299 pages (5%)
    – Revised translation. 0/8 sections (0%)
    – Final translation. 0/8 sections (0%)
    – Get a positive psychology expert to proofread the result.
    – Blog around it. I’m thinking of doing a blog post on how I came across the article and why I wanted to share it in French too.
    – Post on the blog with links to the original article.

Personal goals

  1. Self-development: Not a new goal per se, but I’ve decided to do it more so I’d like to keep track of what I’m doing.
    – « Writing the queer voice » course.
    – « Teaching online » MOOC.
    – « Mastering the legal and financial aspects of professional training » MOOC.
    – Japanese study.
  2. Housework: We’ll start implementing the plan and making adjustments when necessary during this Round.
Assess how much time each task would take (with Hubby). 15%
Discuss & set frequency with Hubby. 5%

    Here my short-term goals are:
x Decide what to sell, donate or keep in the storage room.
x Put what we’re selling on the French equivalent of Craigslist.
    x Donate the rest ASAP.
x Reorganize the storing room (so far it’s been « as is »: we arrive and put things where we can…)
x Clean the entrance porch (because that’s where we’d like to put coats and stuff for sale)
x Get rid of more clothing, especially bras I’m never going to wear anymore because underwire is definitely out of the way!
    ~ skin: moisturize daily.
~ skin: use lotion before bed.
~ Go back to walking at least once between every check-in once confinement is over.
  6. Mental health quest: I’ll just record things for further reference.

#ROW80 – 2020 – Round 1 – Wrap-up

ROW80 2020 – Round 1 – Wrapping up

Hi everyone!

Time to assess the progress made during this Round.

Overall, it’s been okay, though there were quite a few extra goals that took priority and forced me to adjust the plan.

I don’t take a break between rounds, so I’ll just keep moving on and, hopefully, will meet some goals I had hoped to meet by today.

How about you? How did this Round treat you? Let me know in the comments! I hope you’re well, wherever you are. ^^

Color code
red=0-9%
1025%
2645%
4659%

PASS: This is just routine now, so it’s good. =D
    #52haikus2020 (on Wednesdays)
    – compile the above.
    #chaïku (on Saturdays)
    – compile the « chaïkus ».
  2. New novella Ophelia’s Boudoir: I will edit and revise, probably in Round 2.
  3. Little Black Riding Hood (aka LBRH aka CS1) and ensuing saga (code name « CS »): I will aim at finishing the first draft during this Round. Then I will reread and make the first revisions during Round 2 or 3. Finally I will move on to planning the second volume in more details, and hopefully start writing it. (I might plan the beta-reading but the final revisions will have to wait until I’m finished writing the whole saga).
PASS: I’m happy to report this was my big win of the Round! =D

Reread and edit (1st revisions: coherence check, during Round 2): 0/101 chapters (0%)
Revise (2nd revisions: improvements and new structure, during Round 3 or 4)
Find beta-readers for the long run.
    – Plan the second volume in detail.
  4. À tâtons (Feeling the Way), an erotic novel: After completing LBRH (and editing Curiouser and Curiouser), I will start writing the first draft, so normally during Round 2. During Round 1, I will check the plan and enrich it.
  5. Malice au Pays des Merveilles / Miss Chief in Wonderland, an erotica sci-fi series (of short stories or novella): After completing the first draft for À tâtons, I will go back to this series, hopefully during Round 3.

Work-related Goals (courses and so on)

    1. Upload my catalogue for workers: I will make sure the catalogue is up to date by the end of the Round. I will also prepare further additions for later. PASS: One of the things that had to take priority and I’m glad it’s done because I’ve been able to do much more since I completed that.
    2. Get the quality certification: I will plan my course of action during this round and start collecting data and implementing new processes/systemizing existing processes.
PASS: Things are looking very good and if it weren’t for the lockdown, I’d probably book the audit soon. But for now, wait and see.
WEEKLY GOAL: I will follow the plan I made (every step has been inputted into Todoist to give me reminders; not everything is here though).
      reorganize my archives65%
locate proof for the audit. 80%
create new processes and related doc. 4/7 (57%)

    3. Online courses: I will aim at completing the uploading of Hanashimashou module 1 and starting the beta-testing process during this Round or at the beginning of the next.
FAIL: Unfortunately, and despite working hard on it at the start of the Round, I did not meet my goal.

WEEKLY GOAL: I will make preparations when I can.
Make a course about self-publishing (on Amazon) for this site.  (20%)

Personal goals

  1. Housework: We’ll start planning during this Round.
PASS: We are starting to do to.

Assess how much time each task would take (with Hubby). 12%
Discuss & set frequency with Hubby. 5%
Cross-reference with the renovation work and decluttering efforts to be more effective. 5%
Schedule one-time things to get them out of the way.
Create reminders for things that need to be done regularly.
Decide on a color code to assess completion.
    Start doing. 5%
  2. House renovation & redesign: We will work to improve our finances then focus on insulation and finishing what’s been started.
Extra color code for the insulating project. Plus what needs to be done before is this indigo.
x Keep working on the parental suite upstairs
(ceiling, walls, floor). We will finish the bathroom in January or February or March.
x Take care of the leak problem.
We will ask the roofer for the paper until we get it, then get the insurance to do their job. PASS: We did the necessary paperwork.
x Add walls and a door to the new toilets.

    >INSULATING QUEST:
x Insulate the wall in the family room where a fireplace used to be.

x Insulate the unused fireplace in the office.
    x Insulate Hubby’s office.
x Replace the porch doors and entrance door.
x Check the roof of the annex and replace its window.
    x Insulate the annex.

x Rebuild the wall between the family room and the garage.

x Bury the water evacuation pipe that’s in the yard.
x Finish the electricity in the garage and annex.
x Expand the laundry room into the garage we don’t really use and make a gaming and working out room in there.

  3. Unpacking & decluttering: I will just try and unpack things as other rooms get ready. We will also sell or donate baby stuff and other things we don’t use anymore. But this will have to wait until my full recovery.
FAIL: Hoping to do so during the confinement (plus it’s spring, perfect time for cleaning and decluttering, or at least get ready to declutter when lockdown is over).
  4. Health quest: I will give myself a cooler month in January and rest as much as I can, then I will set my goals according to how things go. Since I can’t really work out for 3 months after the operation, I will go back to fitness and yoga during the second Round. I will evaluate weekly in terms of check or cross ( or X) for each subgoal; a check means over 50%.
PASS: Overall it’s been good, though sometimes it was only okay.

    Get some rest:
~ meditate at least 3 minutes on workdays (Wed through Sat).
~ nap when the girls do (Sat through Tues).
    Take care of myself:
~ hair: brush twice a day for luster. X
    ~ skin: moisturize daily.
~ skin: use lotion before bed.
    Be active:
~ stretch every morning to avoid muscle pains.
~ do something related to cleaning or decluttering every Sunday morning.
~ walk in the neighborhood at least once between two check-ins. (not exactly recommended right now…) X
  5. Mental health quest: I’ll just record things for further reference.
PASS: I get the feeling I’m improving a little every day. ^^
    Week 12: NTR.
Week 11: NTR; thinking about starting a gratitude journal.
Week 10: Reading about being emotionally intense and dealing with overwork and my work-life balance.
Week 9: Facing my feeling of uprootedness.
Week 8: Getting better but still not the best of sleepers.
Week 7: tears + drowning nightmare; finding I’m emotionally intense.
Week 6: Insomnia; one panic attack.
    Week 1-5: NTR.

#ROW80 – 2020 – Round 1 – Check-in 23

ROW80 2020 – Round 1 – Twenty-third check-in

Hi everyone!

I normally do a final check-in that is also a wrap-up, but for this Round, I’d like to separate them. So here’s my final check-in, and I’ll post a wrap-up tomorrow.

As far as COVID-19 is concerned, we might be carriers since we saw a friend just before confinement who is now officially infected. That would explain the fever episodes, which is fine. We’re not among the fragile population, so we mostly need to be mindful of not spreading it further. Our sick friend on the other hand has asthma so we hope the virus does not become too hard on him. He’s not coughing so things are as good as they can be in his condition.

I’m still working from home and I keep time to rest a bit, but I must confess I hoped to work on more goals. But if we are infected and the confinement is made longer, I suppose we’ll still have some time once we actually recover. The only thing I know is I’m not going to risk being any sicker than I currently am by pushing my body when it’s telling me to take it easy.

How about you? Is anyone you know affected? Do you think you might be too? If so, how do you feel about it? Let me know in the comments! I hope you’re well, wherever you are. ^^

Color code
red=0-9%
1025%
2645%
4659%

My general goal here is to wrap up the translations I did in 2019 then move on to new translations during the second semester.

  1. The Dragon’s Secret (English to French): I will revise my translation this year, aiming at publishing it next year or the year after that (and also use it as a model for my MOOC on self-publishing).

    – Final translation: 0/19 chapters (0%)
  2. Red Hot Springs: I will complete the revisions during this round.
  3. We Missed Each Other: I will complete the revisions during this round.
  4. Article about being emotionally intense.
    WEEKLY GOAL: Keep reading.

    – Revised translation. 0/8 sections (0%)
    – Final translation. 0/8 sections (0%)
    – Get a positive psychology expert to proofread the result.

    – Post on the blog with links to the original article.
  5. Cruel Fairy Tales: I will start translating during the summer.

Personal goals

  1. Housework: We’ll start planning during this Round.
Assess how much time each task would take (with Hubby). 10%
We’ve been hearing hammering and such since Monday so we’re hoping it’s being taken care of.
x Add walls and a door to the new toilets.

#ROW80 – 2020 – Round 1 – Check-in 22

ROW80 2020 – Round 1 – Twenty-second check-in

Hi everyone!

The first week of confinement is over and the only real difficulty we had was nap time. The change in our routine made L a bit restless, and she’s been trying to push bedtime and naptime to a later time. That would be ok if she did not wake her sister in the process.

Today, we tried postponing naptime and it worked, so we’ll just adapt our routine. As a result, they wake up later in the afternoon and so we’re thinking of having dinner time earlier rather than a snack. We’ll see if that schedule sticks first.

In terms of writing, the lockdown means more time for myself (including the time I spend going places for my work and the girls in a normal week), so I was able to get a little ahead with my revisions.

For the rest, no big breakthrough, I’m just getting used to our new week. We’ve also been feeling a bit sick. The girls sometimes have a low fever, and Hubby and I also get mild symptoms, so we try to stick to a strict confinement in case it’s COVID-19. We’re not among the fragile population, so we know we don’t have to worry as long as the symptoms stay this manageable.

How about you? Did you settle into a new pace for the lockdown? Let me know in the comments! I hope you’re well, wherever you are. ^^

Color code
red=0-9%
1025%
2645%
4659%

    – compile the above.

Publishing Goals

  1. Impolite Pleasures ~ Erotic Haikus (French-English): I will release on Valentine’s Day. Most preparations are done, so I will stick to my marketing plan.
~ Send a copy to BNF. Planned by the end of the month.

WEEKLY GOAL: Share the book trailer and order the copy for BNF.
I need to be realistic, I don’t have the energy it takes to promote the book properly right now. As for the BNF copy, quite frankly, I’ll wait until April since the facility is closed anyway.

Plus that would allow me to join Amazon’s « Plumes Francophones » contest. To be released on June, 23 (probably). In this Round, I’ll make sure every beta-reader has started the book.

  3. Unpacking & decluttering: I will just try and unpack things as other rooms get ready. We will also sell or donate baby stuff and other things we don’t use anymore. But this will have to wait until my full recovery.
    Get some rest:
~ meditate at least 3 minutes on workdays (Wed through Sat).
~ nap when the girls do (Sat through Tues).
    Take care of myself:
~ hair: brush twice a day for luster.

#ROW80 – 2020 – Round 1 – Check-in 21

ROW80 2020 – Round 1 – Twenty-first check-in

Hi everyone!

I thought Round 1 was ending tomorrow and was getting ready to wrap up, but it turns out we have one more week to go. It feels like I’ve earned some extra time, that’s great! =D

On Monday, French President Macron made another speech and added further restrictions to the original ones from Friday, mostly because some people could not see how important it was to avoid gathering (there even was a demonstration in the streets of Paris…)

This does not change anything at home: the plan was that I would give all my classes from Skype or such, and Hubby’s company can’t keep runnning (he’s a driving instructor, so they’re banned from working). I also arranged my schedule to be able to look after our eldest once the schools were closed, so now, the two of us can have a chance of homeschooling a little, something we would have liked to do if it had not been such a pain in terms of administration.

Today was very busy since I normally have lots of face-to-face classes on Wednesdays and had to help the students transition to online classes. So I’m basically posting this before going to bed. Thankfully, the rest of the week should be cooler.

How about you? Are you working from home? If so, was it easy to adapt or are you struggling some? Or maybe you’re among those who have to go to work? Let me know in the comments! I hope you’re well, wherever you are. ^^

Color code
red=0-9%
1025%
2645%
4659%

Revise (2nd revisions: improvements and new structure, during Round 3 or 4)

    x Donate the rest ASAP.

#ROW80 – 2020 – Round 1 – Check-in 20

ROW80 2020 – Round 1 – Twentieth check-in

Hi everyone!

Last time, I explained how overworked I had been. This has forced me to reconsider our work/life balance.

Hubby is gradually turning into an entrepreneur too, so I got worried that he might end up overworked too, especially as I know well enough how we tend to not count the long hours when we launch a business. Since he still has a few months to go at his other job, we’re looking at a complicated transition period. Thankfully, his boss seems to be quite cooperative.

Back to work/life balance, I realized I had done something I normally don’t allow myself: work on a daily basis, including Sundays, which are supposed to be dedicated to home and family… The catalogue goal did not seem too much since I paused other goals to do it, but here’s the thing: it was not something very productive or motivating, and the many technical issues made me feel even more acutely how much time I was spending on this when I had so many more important things to do. So I tried to get it done as fast as I could, hence the daily working, but in the end it was so debilitating a job I lost my drive in the process.

Now that it’s finally done (I’ll still have a few courses to add as I develop them, but that’s nothing compared to the 650+ packs I already offer—depending how long a course students want…) and I can say I breathe a little better for it.

Starting tomorrow and to prevent the COVID-19 virus from spreading too much, all schools in France are closing by presidential decree and until further notice. Quite ironically, this is definitely going to mess up the work/life balance, though we quickly managed to accommodate L into our schedules for next week. E should have a normal week at the nanny’s since she’s not 3 yet, phew!

I do worry about the economic consequences since so many working parents will have to stay home with the kids (or pay a nanny, thus spending the money they make…). And many businesses have to close too…

Another thing I find ironic is that lots of parents will ask grandparents to look after the kids, thus spreading the virus to a more fragile population if what we hear about kids being such great carrier is true…

The truth is I don’t know what to think about the pandemic. We see so many different messages… Medical experts do not seem too worried and, though I’m no conspiracist, I wonder about the way the media convey the sense of alarm.

I feel we could just be reasonable and stay alert. Here, we see people rushing to supermarkets to store ridiculous items (pasta, rice, toilet paper…) in ridiculous amounts as if we were all confined. And there is no shortage (not yet, that is) so this is really weird. It looks like there’s going to be a lot of wasting though.

Anyway, we’re getting ready for semi-confined life and trying to salvage what we can of a couple of friends’ wedding (and bachelor/bachelorette’s parties). We’re not party animals, so we can deal with a quiet evening at someone’s place, but we do start to wonder whether they will be able to get married on the original date…

With all this, I have no idea how I will work on my goals. Maybe I’ll find I have more time for them, or maybe I’ll sacrifice them for more important stuff… I guess it will be on a day-to-day basis from now on and until further notice.

How about you? What made you consider your work/life balance? How would you say you feel about it right now? And how about the pandemic? Any drastic measures where you are? Any impact on your lives? Let me know in the comments! I hope you’re well, wherever you are. ^^

Personal goals

I’m adding a chore goal because we still haven’t found our pace in the not so new house. For this round, it’s mostly about assessing what we need to do and how often.

  1. Housework: We’ll start planning during this Round.
List chores and others. I started because it was on my mind a lot and I needed it to get out of there. 90%
Make the list interactive: I’m thinking of using a Google sheet so we can see it from many different devices.
Assess how much time each task would take (with Hubby).
Discuss & set frequency with Hubby.
Cross-reference with the renovation work and decluttering efforts to be more effective.
Schedule one-time things to get them out of the way.
Create reminders for things that need to be done regularly.
Decide on a color code to assess completion.
    Start doing.
We will ask the roofer for the paper until we get it, then get the insurance to do their job.
x Add walls and a door to the new toilets.

    Be active:
~ stretch every morning to avoid muscle pains.
~ do something related to cleaning or decluttering every Sunday morning.
~ walk in the neighborhood at least once between two check-ins.
  5. Mental health quest: I’ll just record things for further reference.

#ROW80 – 2020 – Round 1 – Check-in 19

ROW80 2020 – Round 1 – Nineteenth check-in

Hi everyone!

I seem to have been a bit overworked lately, even though I tried to replace goals rather than piling them on…

I guess the rush we had explains a lot, but I was really surprised since actual work is slow at the moment, si I basically worked on my projects on workdays when I had no students.

Still, I ended up feeling incapable of doing a thing last weekend and was faced with other signs, including body pains and other ways my body used so as to tell me I had to stop…

Today was better though. I took Monday off and worked moderately yesterday, and quite ironically, a technical issue on the catalogue website made me wrap things up out of annoyance, so that’s finally behind me, yay!!

How about you? How do you know you need to take a break?  Let me know in the comments! I hope you’re well, wherever you are. ^^

My general goal here is to wrap up the translations I did in 2019 then move on to new translations during the second semester.

  1. The Dragon’s Secret (English to French): I will revise my translation this year, aiming at publishing it next year or the year after that (and also use it as a model for my MOOC on self-publishing).

  2. Red Hot Springs: I will complete the revisions during this round.
  3. We Missed Each Other: I will complete the revisions during this round.

I just needed to finish something on Monday!

    – Read related book in English. 47%
    – Read related book in French to check the official translations for key phrases. I read the introduction to check it was a faithful rendering and to help me with the translation of the article. 16/299 pages (5%)

    – Revised translation. 0/8 sections (0%)
    – Final translation. 0/8 sections (0%)
    – Get a positive psychology expert to proofread the result.

    – First draft translation
    – Revised translation
    – Final translation

Personal goals

OK, now I can tell it’s probably going to happen in April after all. but it’s for a good cause : Hubby landed his first client! ^^
x Take care of the leak problem.
We will ask the roofer for the paper until we get it, then get the insurance to do their job. We probably need to follow up on this…
x Add walls and a door to the new toilets.

    >INSULATING QUEST: We tried to get in touch with the plasterer, but no luck so far…
x Insulate the wall in the family room where a fireplace used to be.

x Insulate the unused fireplace in the office.
    x Insulate Hubby’s office.
x Replace the porch doors and entrance door.
x Check the roof of the annex and replace its window.
    x Insulate the annex.

x Rebuild the wall between the family room and the garage.

x Bury the water evacuation pipe that’s in the yard.
x Finish the electricity in the garage and annex.
x Expand the laundry room into the garage we don’t really use and make a gaming and working out room in there.

  2. Unpacking & decluttering: I will just try and unpack things as other rooms get ready. We will also sell or donate baby stuff and other things we don’t use anymore. But this will have to wait until my full recovery.
Be active: The cleaning happened on Monday evening instead of Sunday morning but that box was checked at least (we did have a family gathering on Sunday anyway). After pulling a trapeze muscle from doing… well nothing, really… I decided to revisit an old habit and stretch in the morning. This has also helped the healing of my trapeze.
~ NEW (or rather renewed) GOAL: stretch every morning to avoid muscle pains.
~ do something related to cleaning or decluttering every Sunday morning.
~ walk in the neighborhood at least once between two check-ins. X
  4. Mental health quest: I’ll just record things for further reference.
Week 10: Reading about being emotionally intense and dealing with overwork; I did think a lot about our work/life balance now that Hubby is going gradually freelance and we discussed how this would affect us both.

#ROW80 – 2020 – Round 1 – Check-in 18

ROW80 2020 – Round 1 – Eighteenth check-in

Hi everyone!

Today, we had a family meal, so I’m posting this before going to bed, hence the short format for this introduction.

This week, I was touched because my sister-in-law turned to me for advice on writing. I don’t feel like I’m a reference or anything, but I was glad it was so clear to her I was a writer.

Then yesterday, someone started a Twitter thread inviting people to introduce authors they like and I got a really nice description, so that also lifted my spirits after the beta-reading fiasco.

How about you? What has lifted your spirits lately?  Let me know in the comments! I hope you’re well, wherever you are. ^^

Color code
red=0-9%
1025%
2645%
4659%

  2. New novella Ophelia’s Boudoir: I will edit and revise, probably in Round 2.
  3. Little Black Riding Hood (LBRH and CS1) and ensuing saga (code name « CS »): I will aim at finishing the first draft during this Round. Then I will reread and make the first revisions during Round 2 or 3. Finally I will move on to planning the second volume in more details, and hopefully start writing it. (I might plan the beta-reading but the final revisions will have to wait until I’m finished writing the whole saga).
Reread and edit (1st revisions: coherence check): 0/101 chapters (0%)
Revise (2nd revisions: improvements and new structure)

WEEKLY GOAL: I’ll link the existing Japanese and English courses on the website, add all French courses and try to link them as well.
I even started adding the remaining English courses. ^^
NEW WEEKLY GOAL: I’ll finish adding the existing English courses and will try and link them too.
Add the English courses. 414/654 (63%)
Add the new French courses. 143/143 (100%) – completed March, 5
Link English courses on my website. 327/654 (50%)
Link French courses on my website. 143/143 (100%) – completed yesterday
Prepare the future addition of English courses.
x blended courses: I’ll add as I develop them, so I’ll just make the preparations this year, that is to say add them to my spreadsheet to be ready to update the catalogue in due time.
Prepare the future addition of Japanese blended courses.
x regular courses: I’ll add them to the spreadsheet because they’re being developped.
x blended courses: I’ll add them to the spreadsheet and will draft the addition of Hanashimashou.
Prepare the future addition of French courses.
x regular courses: not sure there will be more yet, so I’ll probably keep that for the end.
x blended courses: I’ll add the equivalent of the existing one to the spreadsheet.
Prepare the future addition of Computer & Media courses.
    2. Get the quality certification: I will plan my course of action during this round and start collecting data and implementing new processes/systemizing existing processes.
WEEKLY GOAL: I will follow the plan I made (every step has been inputted into Todoist to give me reminders; not everything is here though).
I’m even a little ahead. Keeping the same goal for the week to come.
reorganize my archives. I got them out and started sorting them. 50%
locate proof for the audit. I’ve pretty much located everything but I can only consider this goal is completed once the archive are reorganized so that I can find what I need when I need it. 80%
create new processes and related doc. 4/7 (57%)
      make general course syllabi.1/34 (3%)
    3. Online courses: I will aim at completing the uploading of Hanashimashou module 1 and starting the beta-testing process during this Round or at the beginning of the next.
WEEKLY GOAL: I will make preparations when I can. X
I think I need to wrap up the previous 2 goals to be able to go back to my former schedule and get some progress here, because these goals are all time-consuming. Still keeping this goal for next week, though.
Make a course about self-publishing (on Amazon) for this site.  (20%)

Personal goals

We will ask the roofer for the paper until we get it, then get the insurance to do their job.
x Add walls and a door to the new toilets.

  2. Unpacking & decluttering: I will just try and unpack things as other rooms get ready. We will also sell or donate baby stuff and other things we don’t use anymore. But this will have to wait until my full recovery.
    Be active:
~ do something related to cleaning or decluttering every Sunday morning.
~ walk in the neighborhood at least once between two check-ins.
  4. Mental health quest: I’ll just record things for further reference.
    Reading about the emotionally intense.

#ROW80 – 2020 – Round 1 – Check-in 17

ROW80 2020 – Round 1 – Seventeenth check-in

Hi everyone!

It’s been a mitigated start of week but I’ve made progress on many goals, so I’ll count that as mostly good.

The beta-reading phase is forcing me to face my trust issues a lot. So far, I mostly worked with people I know, friends or family mostly, and I told them to be brutally honest.

I recently told you how I’ve been blessed with a wonderful beta-reader for my English translation. Boosted by that experience, I decided to ask someone I don’t actually know to beta-read my first novel. That has proved a mitigated experience. The feedback was good (and fast, that was real nice!) but a bit too unilateral to my taste. When I mentioned this, I seem to have offended the person (not too deeply, I hope) when I was stating a fact: I like exchanging, not being told off for my possible mistakes (which I make, like anyone else…).

So there you have it, my trust issues came crawling back. Though I feel they would not go as far as try and turn against me, I hate how things were left. I can understand how online exchanges can be hard to interpret sometimes, but they did tell me I had no right to disagree on a question of word choice, so of course, I then strongly disagreed! I tried to express my views on the question but was faced with misunderstanding, or failure to accept feedback, I don’t know since I don’t actually know the person. All I can say is that the reproaches that followed were unfair and hit a nerve (I’ve always hated injustice to me or others). Not in the sense that I got angry—I was annoyed at best. But it did trigger all my warnings about strangers and how I should never trust them…

And I must confess this is something strongly related to France which is overall negative and critical. I teach English as a second language and I see dozens of students every year that know some English and dare not use it because they deem themselves not good enough. Our educational system is so prescriptive French people fail to see there is never only one way to succeed or do something… This is one of the many reasons why I left my teaching job with the French Ministry of Education.

I’ve always felt like a misfit in many aspects of my life (only bisexual mixed kid in a homophobic and racist family, remember?) and I still feel very often that I don’t belong in my own country. For instance, there’s been an upsurge of basic racism agains Asian people because of the CO-VID19 epidemic lately; also people just won’t accept that they sometimes don’t get paid when they don’t work, always counting on some sort of special treatment for any reason; gay rights are still faced with many challenges, the latest being how some people try to keep gay couples from having kids; and these are only examples of how most French people are definitely not understanding (and threading upon) the words that are supposed to define us as a nation (liberté, égalité, fraternité…).

My life is here now, and I don’t want to unroot my daughters by taking them away from the small family we have left at such a tender age, but I do not feel at home here. I don’t want to go back to Texas (or another state in the US) either, though I did feel at home there back in the days—though maybe that’s only because of one particularly important individual. Canada’s always been appealing to me, but I’ve never been, so there’s no telling how that would actually work. It’s something we sometimes discuss with Hubby, though we know right now, it’s out of the question, mostly financially. There was also the question of his job, but since he’s changing that, relocating might become more realistic once we’re done with the mortgage. So not anytime soon, but sometimes, I do need to vent, so there you have it. I’m French, and sometimes I just hate it.

How about you? Do you feel at home where you are? If so, how long did that take and have you ever felt uprooted? If not, how do you deal with it and do you have an idea of where would feel like home?  Let me know in the comments! I hope you’re well, wherever you are. ^^

Color code
red=0-9%
1025%
2645%
4659%

    – compile the above.

Revise (2nd revisions: improvements and new structure)
Find beta-readers for the long run.

x blended courses: I’ll add them to the spreadsheet and will draft the addition of Hanashimashou.

Personal goals

We will ask the roofer for the paper until we get it, then get the insurance to do their job.
x Add walls and a door to the new toilets.

  2. Unpacking & decluttering: I will just try and unpack things as other rooms get ready. We will also sell or donate baby stuff and other things we don’t use anymore. But this will have to wait until my full recovery.
    Get some rest:
~ meditate at least 3 minutes on workdays (Wed through Sat).
~ nap when the girls do (Sat through Tues).
    Take care of myself:
~ hair: brush twice a day for luster.
    ~ skin: moisturize daily.
~ skin: use lotion before bed. X
    Be active:
~ do something related to cleaning or decluttering every Sunday morning.
~ walk in the neighborhood at least once between two check-ins.
  4. Mental health quest: I’ll just record things for further reference.
    Reading about the emotionally intense.
